NJ Area Hikes

94 North to South

This was a mistake, we were looking for the Stairway to Heaven Hike and made a wrong turn and found this. Starting out on a plank boardwalk, you make your way through sensitive swamp land. After 3/4ths of a mile you come to a walk only suspension bridge built by donations of cash and labor of the ATC. Its great to cross the creek on it. Once you enter the woods the trail is well marked, there are bridges crossing streams as you make your way through fields of color. You cross a bike trail at one point and head out towards 94 South. Once we hit the road, we turned and walked back. If you continue across the road and up the mountain, there is a loop hike called the Stairway to Heaven loop with excellent views. In & out the hike is 6 miles.

Jocky Hollow

Scenery - 8 - it’s not a 10 because there are higher Mountains in Vermont to climb but the views are awesome & the waterfalls along the way break up the climb.

Ease of Hike - 8 - This is a strenuous hike and not for the beginner. Going up will tax your thighs, going down will punish your Knees and it’s relentless with almost no level ground. 9 & 10 are reserved for the hardest climbs in the US so that gives you an indication of this hike.

Time - 5 hours 40 minutes (with lunch).

Merrill Creek

What a fantastic place – and I went on a cold winter day. You can first go to the Visitor Center and pick up a map. There is a Ranger there 7 days a week (yea I’m serious). There are several feeder trails and a main trail around the reservoir. If you combine the Blue trail, part of the Orange trail and the Reservoir loop as they call it, the hike will be about 7.5 miles. (Want a 2-5 mile walk/hike, walk to the right of the visitor center out past the second dam and back.)

Mt Tammany

Mount Tammanay offers a few hours of hard work, rewarded with a great view of the surrounding area. Combine that with additional trails crossing the rest of the Worthington State Forest and the possibility of rafting on the Delaware river, and you have a full day trip, well worth the long drive from the Metro area.

Mt Taurus, NY

Scenery - 7 - Great views, a bit too much civilization, Ruins are a neat addition but nothing spectacular. Eating lunch as you look up the Hudson makes the 7.5 mile day hike more then worth it.

Ease of Hike - 8 - The initial climb is 1500 feet over two miles or so, take your time.

Wyanokie High Point

Scenery - 9 - Great 360 degree views, Turkey vultures and Black birds circle about, A large cave, an old collapsed mine, creek crossings and a great 30-40 ft waterfall all make this a terrific hike.

Ease of Hike - 8 - A 5+ mile hike will get the heart going on several occasions. It is an 1100 ft climb to the top. We saw 7 yr olds doing it though so take your time and give it a shot.

Time - 3 hours 40 minutes with dog
